We started working
with English Shepherds in 1981. We needed help rounding up our stock twice
a day for feeding and milking. Our first dogs came from the
Blankenship's in Tennessee. They were an unrelated pair that we bred
for our first litter in 1984. We have since added the bloodlines from the
Southerland's and the Kamp's in Ohio and the Maynard's in
Tennessee. Our dogs are primarily black and tan. They are
tough enough to be stock dogs yet gentle enough for your children and
smart enough to know the difference. We strive to have two
litters each year, depending on market demand.
Carousel Farm is
located in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia (60 miles west of
Washington, D.C.).

"Just
wanted let you know that our Ginger, from the August, 2006 litter, is a
darling. She is already house trained and staying in her crate when we
must leave her to go on errands that might be too dangerous for our little
lady. She has won my husband's heart and waits on his old hunting
coat for him to return to the house. She "has a head full of sense" as my
grandmother would say. She loves to run and play fetch with a ball. What a
wonderful personality. Thanks for our little girl." |

From a
California family: March '08
"I hope everyone at Carousel Farm is doing well. I see that a new
litter of puppies was born on January 7. What a coincidence! It took me
back to the night you called to let us know the puppies were born, January
7, 2007. It is such a happy memory.
Around this time last year we were on
the way to pick up our puppy and bring him to his new home in California.
When we left your farm he settled in next to Will for the drive to Dulles
airport. We returned the car and moved through check-in and security with
ease. Once we were on the plane he quickly endeared himself to the crew
and passengers then went to sleep content in his carrier on the seat
between us. Quite an adventure for a puppy’s first day out! It was so
difficult to choose between the adorable puppies, but when we finally
arrived home I knew we had made the perfect choice. Will named him Apollo.
He is so smart! In just a few days he
was completely house broken. Then he began to master a new behavior or
trick every three or four days. So eager to learn, you could see he was
actually enjoying each new challenge.
Apollo has such a loving disposition; he
gets along well with children and other dogs, he is friendly, yet still
protective. And it turns out he likes the water. He gets to run on
the beach nearly every morning and loves chasing his ball into the waves.
We are always asked what kind of dog he
is. Most people guess that he is a mixed breed of Rottweiler or Doberman
because of his coloring; I almost want to have a handout ready to supply
them with his information. Everyone comments on his beautiful shiny coat
and we are often asked if we show him because he seems to prance instead
of walk. We found a place where Apollo is learning to herd, just for fun.
He is so fast and agile he took to it immediately and has a great time
chasing around the sheep.
I’m so glad we found you and we can’t
thank you enough for breeding your very special English Shepherds.
Apollo has brought so much joy to our family. I just wanted you to know he
is thriving and I look forward to returning to West Virginia, this time
for a female. And I know now that any English Shepherd puppy will be the
perfect choice."

“We are fortunate to have found you, and are so appreciative to
you both for being such delightful people and responsible breeders. Thank
you so much for everything! We just love Sophie so much – she is quite the
little lady! We had a nice, quiet trip home, and Sophie did great. I held
her the whole way; she shook and panted, but she did great. We are having
the best time with her. She has adjusted to our house very quickly, and is
a playful and happy pup. You were right when you said she was a special
girl – she certainly is, and very smart too. She is doing great with her
house training, and has been doing her “business” outside. She has taken
to the collar and leash very well, and has just about learned to master
going up and down the stairs. We took her to the vet last night for a
checkup; she did great. The vet said she looks good and healthy, and her
stool sample was negative. She was just great and we bought her some more
squeaky toys since those are her favorite. She has had a lot of visitors,
and everyone comments on what a sweet and calm disposition she has. She is
a total love bug and loves to give lots of kisses. She is a sweetheart!
Everyone we see just loves her and wants to know more about the ES breed.
You are wonderful breeders and should be so proud of your puppies. Your
hard work and dedication definitely pays off, and is truly appreciated by
us, and I am sure all of your puppy clients. They are wonderful and smart
dogs – we are so lucky to have found you!”

From a Massachusetts family:
“Just wanted to let you know that the trip back went great –
“Bosco” took turns lying on everyone’s laps the whole way back and never
got restless or carsick. Since we’ve been home, her adjustment has been
much better than we could have expected. She already has great
housetraining instincts and is making great progress there. She’s been
very playful and happy and a LOT of fun. She seems to be doing very well
when she’s home alone – not much “destruction” and not much fuss when we
leave.”

From
a Kansas family:
“…He was great at the clinic, no fear, just a happy-go-lucky
experience. The vet loves him! Says he is a great, great dog and
physically sound through and through; strong knees and hips. Showed him to
the other two vets; everybody interested in the ES breed, noting what a
calm, happy puppy he is, no jumping up or yapping. No one has ever heard
of an ES before and they were very curious to learn about them. He’s so
good, Liz, you should see him. He’s changing by the day, becoming more
self-assured, quite the little smartie, too. He “comes”, “sits”, “stays”,
and “lies down” with more and more consistency. In the last two days, I
clicker-trained him to ring the bell inside his hard rubber play ball! He
loves “school”, when we have just training, clicker or otherwise. Such a
good little student! Then we play, then he takes a nap in his crate, then
he’s ready for a walk. He’s a busy guy in the yard…and chases bunnies (we
have quite a bunny and squirrel population). He is extremely fast and
agile. He’s so alert, yet calm. I can’t even describe how enchanted we are
with him. The feeling is mutual with him…he loves us so much, so full of
kisses and cuddles. It’s impossible to imagine how life was before we got
him, and how lonely we were for another dog since our other dog died last
summer…”

From a California owner:
“…Jack is everything you said he
was! What a great “little” guy! He certainly is alert and very
self-assured, and what a love! Thank you, thank you, thank you! He’s so
aware of my every move and temperament. He follows me around the garden,
to the mail box, and on walking trips. He is great with all the small kids
we meet; very gentle. Thank you for raising such fine animals. Jack is
worth every bit of trouble we went through to get him here. I love him
very much!”

From a Vermont family:
“Dasher turned on year old on 12/25
and what a sweetheart she is. We have never had such a loving, well
behaved dog in all our lives. Her personality is absolutely charming and
she is so full of expression and energy. She really is a joy to have,
thanks to you and Jim. She is really a special dog, you both can be so
proud of the pups you breed. Your work and dedication really shows.
Everyone comments on her beautiful coat and her loving personality. I even
had a compliment on how white and strong her teeth are. I could go on and
on…” |
